These are slow-moving, mindful classes for increasing mind-body awareness and improving your posture, coordination, and well-being. Awareness Through Movement (ATM) is like a movement puzzle, designed to optimize motor patterns for daily activities such as walking, lifting, rolling, reaching, turning, shifting weight, or transitioning from lying to standing. Composed of gentle, guided movement explorations, the practice brings attention to your skeletal system. When your skeleton is poorly organized in movement, your muscles work overtime and your joints suffer, resulting in limitation, frustration, fatigue, and eventually injury.
ATM classes are appropriate for everyone: from highly-skilled athletes to those with little movement experience or recovering from injury. They require that you reduce the range and speed of your movement in order to pay close attention to what you’re doing from one moment to the next. It’s the kind of curiosity-driven exploration you did when you were a kid, so learning in this way again can be surprisingly rejuvenating, and fun!
Please wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and arrive at least 5 minutes early. No mat is required.
