Unlike a group class, an individual Feldenkrais® session, or Functional Integration® lesson, is customized entirely for your personal movement needs. Following an initial interview, you will sit and/or lie on a low, firm table with various supports such as foam rollers to maximize your comfort and relaxation. Your instructor will use a combination of gentle, sensitive touch and verbal cues to increase your awareness and guide you towards more optimal patterns of movement.
Individual sessions are recommended for people recovering from injury or needing help in a particular area, whose schedules do not accommodate group classes, or who simply prefer a more hands-on, personalized learning process. Studying individually with an instructor can also help ensure that any group classes you take have the greatest effect possible.
Individual sessions last 60-75 minutes and evoke a meditative, fully embodied state. The ideal way to begin your one-on-one study is to commit to at least eight sessions taking place on a regular basis (ideally twice weekly for new students), both to establish a rapport between instructor and student and to ensure that you integrate what you learn into your daily life.
